Aim of course

There are convincing ways of demonstrating how resilient engineering solutions can be developed, that are easily accessible, easily adaptable, easily accessible, easily maintainable, light weight, changeable and finallye easily reproducible / multiplyable. The task is to combine these aspects together with aesthetic and ecological requirements as well as cost-efficiency to a smart and convincing overall concept (integral design approach). Special attention will be given to digital production methods.

Within the framework of the design, two approaches can be chosen:

Core-activated concrete space blank with self-assembly option:

In this case, a space blanket corresponds to a bodyshell, which provides a safe frame together with building services, thus enabling self-constructionists to enter the multi-storey. In this shell construction, self-construction ends can be used for the expansion of e.g. Walls, as well as the façade enclosure, but also in some cases.

This space blanket is suitable for use and appropriation, thus offering a high DIY design space per storey, enabling social mixing through a variety of possible usage models that work for both office, residential, industrial and creative offices.

A key goal is also to integrate concrete storage technologies (= component activation) into the space blank.

Urban wooden light (system) construction:

In this case self-builders can already participate in the construction of the basic construction. A modular wooden construction is to be developed in consideration of digital prefabrication in combination with DIY activities.

The building should be transportable and fast to assemble and dismantle (Rapid assembly, Plug & Play). This is intended to ensure a short cost-saving construction period and allow further use in other locations.

The focus here is on joining techniques, as well as on solutions for heat storage and sound insulation in multi-storey wood roof construction.

Here as well, freedom of use and appropriation as well as room for maneuver in self-service are strived for.

Ecology and economy:
Permaculture approaches, integrated renewable energy and food production methods as well as energy-efficient building envelope are explicitly encouraged

Thermal simulation and evaluation (ÖGNB) are shown and applied

Life Cycle Analysis LCA is optional

Site: A real site is offered, that will be built on.

Subject of course

The question is:

New tasks for society are pressing on: the creation and maintenance of vitalNeighborhoods in urban districts are said to go beyond flexible building structuresThrough practiced practices such as sharing, fairness, and through the applicationNew digital production methods. Much of this can be excellently practiced in DIY construction workshops or in self-organized workshops, such asEspecially in Transtition Towns, in eco-projects or in FabLabs. But howSuch approaches can be transferred to the multi-storey urban practice and the connectionTo create future ecosocial housing without restricting the scope for action of civil society and future generations?

The vision is:
We understand the city as a lively natural space, similar to the ecosphere of the greatest plurality. Any interaction between people and nature - as a result of the articulation of the
needs of each individual - is perceived as a potential for the further development of the city, whose structures are open for it. Participation takes place not only in the context of assembly processes, but also in part in the realization and maintenance of buildings. Technology and architecture are visible to all participants of the society, understandable and can be co-designed and can be adapted to actual needs.
Research-led teaching:
Designing is carried out in parallel with an ongoing research project. Results from the research project are introduced and applied in the design. The construction of a prototype, which is intended to demonstrate the described approaches, is currently being planned.

Excursion to Barcelona:
The IaaC Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia deals intensively with the topics of design and has an exemplary FabLab. The contact with the university was established, their know-how was to be practically explored in an excursion.

Date: March 31 - April 5  (optional: renewal)
