Aim of course

Introduction Excursion and design class: Wednesday 1.3.2017, 12.00h Sem4

In cooperation with the CEPT University, Faculty of Architecture, Prof. Meghal Arya are we going to look at a district of Ahmedabads historic town. Our site ist the Navrangpura Road, it is thriving due to small scale businesses at the street level and commercial offices above ground, a link between the central business dirstrict and the institutional part of Ahmedabad and also connects the two major rings of the city - the Ashram Road and the CG road.

Historic centers in Indian cities have been resilient in the face of tremendous changes in socio-economic structures, technology, political leadership, overstressed infrastructure and neglected financial investments. A key driver has been the intimate relationship between the living and working environ- ment creating localized interdependencies that are further enriched by lay- ered social and cultural spaces. These networks create tightly meshed local spatial structures that continue to thrive and contribute to the intense urban experiences.

Subject of course

Topic

The city reflects the economical and social development of a time. The his- tory of the city shows us how urban space is used. The industrial revolution has permantently changed the image of the European City. The effects of this time were tried to be improved through the Charta of Athens and through the essential involvement of Le Corbusier. Chandigarh is a model city, that demonstrates positive but also critical aspects of this change. Nowadays we can see the consequences of the functional seperation of the city in residential, industrial and cultural areas in unoccupied districts, regi- ons with poor housing conditions and in large traffic volumes. There is a big transformation in sight today. The desire of people for change brings up new forms of economies, new logistic systems and especially the idea of working and living together. Particularly the digital development and the output of products, creative professions and the intensive exchange of handcrafts and processing technologies lead to new forms of cooperation. The results are new types of co-working spaces and commercial parks, in which people can live, work, produce, market and sell together. Which spaces are suitable for these forms of working and living together?

Through examples in Chandigarh and Ahmedabad and Vienna, we want to look into this phenomenon and design an example of a building that sup- ports these new forms of life. A selected road in the old town will be analy- zed in Ahmedabad, especially how "living together" has been functioning in "pols" and how it is seen today. On the basis of a picked site, we will ana- lyze the location and design a building with the requirements of our time. This place should be a place for communication, selling, working but also for living.

Excursion

There is an excursion to India, where we are going to visit and analyze Ahmedabad, Dehli, Chandigarh as well as other important citydevelopments and selected examples of architecture.
Registration now at the department of spatial and sustainable design during opening hours or at office2533@raumgestaltung.tuwien.ac.at.
