After successful completion of the course, students are able to formulate an urban and socially relevant position in the form of an architectural design with a concrete programme. Based on a critical analysis of existing spatial and social framework conditions, students are able to consider questions relevant to building construction and a resource-saving planning approach as an integrative component of the architectural concept after completing the design course.
Arnara, like many municipalities in Italy, stands for migration, ageing and urban sprawl.
In times when the future seems uncertain, when positive utopias seem to become less, when aspirations seem to lie in the past, we want to lead a creative discussion about architecture in this architectural workshop in Arnara, free from political constraints and decision-making mechanisms. Architectural interventions will be used to re-emphasise the significance of the medieval fortification and to initiate a positive development both internally and externally. A Creative Centre for the region (Ciociaria) and beyond is to be created in the Castello; with spaces and areas for active and theoretical engagement with Architecture, Art and History. The goal is functional versatility and the necessary social level, which will be given the appropriate intermediate space, for interaction with the people in the place. Surprising spatial experiences should awaken positive visionary thoughts, creative processes and an alert awareness of space, architecture and art as well as creative social interaction in the local population and visitors. To this end, the potential and the atmosphere of the working place are to be used.
2023 is the 140th anniversary of the birth of the Arnara-born futurist Arturo Ciacelli - a mental start to turn towards the future.
Workshop on site, duration 15 days (incl. arrival/departure); research, analysis before - and presentation at the beginning of the workshop on a comparable, realised project; discussion of the task and the teaching content, project discussions. Basic research for the design (urban planning, traffic, social and socio-cultural research and analysis of the project site and the immediate surroundings). Active involvement of the participants in the media accompaniment of the workshop. Independent work on the task (with sketches, working models, project studies, etc.), preparation of plans in all scales relevant to building construction and a spatial model.
