The course discusses the implications of extreme urban density on building typologies und the functional logic of architectural spaces. Based on examples from Tokyo, New York and Los Angeles the various theoretical and practical consequences are evaluated and condensed to a general architectural model of superdensity.
The course reviews the modern and postmodern architectural vocabulary that constitutes the contemporary understanding of building typology and functional programming. Based on this critical review of the past, several new conceptual strategies are discussed and compared. Superdensity is used as a general laboratory to develop building typologies beyond the contemporary status.
