This design studio focuses on a creative approach for the architectural design process by referring to artistic principles of abstract painting. Non-architectural artwork will serve as template for architectural models which will be developed in 3h-workshops. Further abstraction and transformation will lead to the design of a functioning building.
Different genres of art and architecture have been influencing each other for thousands of years. Even today architects make use of non-architectural templates ¿ one example is Zaha Hadid who has been inspired by Malevich¿s paintings.
In the introductory lecture we will take a closer look at the relations between architecture and the fine and performing arts. The first part of this design studio will be a workshop with the task to build rather simple working models by using abstract paintings as source of inspiration. This process of abstraction and transformation fosters the interdisciplinary thinking and demonstrates a rapid form-finding method. In the second part we will use the already developed working models as a starting point for the design of an exhibition building. Further abstraction is necessary to create a functional building which originally derived from the abstract painting.
