Southern China - Hongkong - Taiwan
10.04. - 31.04.2017
China is country undergoing massive change. The extent to which this is happening, is especially visible in the Pearl River Delta. Located just behind Hong Kong is a conglomeration of megalopolises, with more than 60 Millionen people living on half the area of Austria. The whole region can serve as an vivid example of the urban and societal changes of the last thirty years - from fishing villages to endlessly sprawling boomtowns. We will scrutinize the transformation of society, reflected in architecture within overarching topics such as Self-image vs External image, property speculation, the role of western architects. Common ideas and images about China will be questioned and investigated. At the same time we will have the opportunity to explore the two other regions in the vicinity - Hong Kong and Taiwan - which share the same cultural background, but have undergone an entirely diverging development in the past hundred years.
