Action A is more economical than action B if for the same intention and same amount of available resourses (energy, time, material), it would demand less of these resources. Optimal, economical and energy efficient usage of materials is primarily not only an intellectual but also an ecological responsibility. It is the aim of the course to make students aware of the utilization of renewable and sustainable materials. In the framework of lectures and exercises students should carefully consider the usage of natural as well as artificial materials and learn to create spaces with these materials.

Analysis and design considerations of materials regarding their local availability, durability renew ability and creative potential as well as cost efficiency, esthetics, economic viability. Low versus high tech materials. Comparing natural and artificial materials. Optimal utilization of materials as well as removing them from their original context. Transformation and alienations of materials. Working with renewable materials. Blending architecture with nature and creating a recyclable architecture.

Fundamental knowledge of materials and an awareness of available resources as well as enthusiasm for experimental design with materials. The course is held in conjunction with representatives of business and industry.
