253.446 Modul Algorithmic Planning and Analysis
This course is in all assigned curricula part of the STEOP.
This course is in at least 1 assigned curriculum part of the STEOP.

2013S, VU, 7.0h, 10.0EC

Properties

  • Semester hours: 7.0
  • Credits: 10.0
  • Type: VU Lecture and Exercise

Aim of course

Technical knowledge:

  • Programing as tool to support the design process. (not bound to a specific programing language)
  • Development of algorithms / models, as abstraction of a planning assignment; Evaluation of the outcome
  • Programing as a medium for the automation of know processes, as tool for the invention of new concepts
  • Exploration of algorithms / models in their use for planning assignments.

Cognitive and practical skills

  • Analytical thinking (reduction of complexity, abstraction, implementation, analysis)
  • Generation and exploration of solutions by means of topics from building theory (circulation, space and space allocation, etc. )

Further expertise:

  • Interaction with computer science, communication of requirements, questioning ideas

Team work in the design and implementation of algorithms

Subject of course

To utilize algorithmic methods in design and architecture a different way of thinking is needed. Not the product but the formulation of rules and the definition of parameters is the aim. Complexity is not the aim, but the result.
To classic elements of architecture are insufficient, new forms and data structures to represent and describe architecture are needed.
The course will teach the formulation, implementation and visualization of planning rules in different programming languages based on substantial knowledge in drawing, CAAD and (3D-) Geometry and some basic ideas of graph theory, vector math and set theory.
