The competition "Solar Decathlon" is probably the most important and most challenging competition in the field of solar and sustainable building between universities worldwide. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) invites to this competition:
"The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon challenges 20 collegiate teams to design, build, and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient, and attractive. The winner of the competition is the team that best blends affordability, consumer appeal, and design excellence with optimal energy production and maximum efficiency. "
Twenty universities around the world are entitled to enter the competition after having been selected by a preliminary decision. For the student teams two years are available for the planning and implementation of the construction project. The aim is to bring architectural and technical aspects of energy planning in line. In addition, organization and project financing play an essential role. The competition ends with a two-week public final round of all teams on the National Mall in Washington, DC. Here, colleges and universities compete against each other with their solar-powered houses and are judged in ten disciplines.
The TU Vienna is Austria's first university, which participates in the Solar Decathlon competition.
The design course of summer term 2012 will focus on design and detail of building structure and envelope. The aim is to meet aesthetic and functional needs in combination with innovative approaches in order to achieve added value for the building - of which, in consequence, also the playing field for the competition project of TU Vienna is dependent.
