253.280 Sustainable planning and building with renewable resources - "Sustainable retrofitting using renewable resources""

2018W, VU, 2.0h, 3.0EC, to be held in blocked form

Properties

  • Semester hours: 2.0
  • Credits: 3.0
  • Type: VU Lecture and Exercise

Aim of course

The dissemination of basics covering the use of renewable resources as building and insulation materials in the building area are the main concern of this lecture.

Especially for the still growing market of retrofitting and revitalisation, sustainable building solutions, that do not affect climate change, are of high interest both for planners and craftsmen.

Alongside to technical basics, provided through practical ¿best-practice¿-examples, taken from already realised retrofit-projects, also the ecological profile of the used materials will be put into focus. The presentation of up-to-date results of several ongoing research and development projects (conducted by GrAT ¿ Center for appropriate technology) will also be part of the lecture and show the students the state of national and international development in the building sector.

Winter semester program: sustainable building with renewable resources related to transition and DIY;

Focus: Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) and Lifecycle Cost Analysis (LCCA)

Subject of course

Main part of the lecture will be the presentation of several best-practice examples for sustainable and climate-friendly retrofitting. The construction examples are all based on actually realized projects from entire Europe and demonstrate the potential of CO2-neutral and energy efficient building using materials from renewable resources.

These examples will include different building categories, like single-family-buildings, schools, hotels and buildings under a preservation order. All displayed buildings include an analysis of their potential to save CO2-emissions as well as the reduced amounts of construction waste.

During the theoretical part oft he lecture, the students will be provided with all necessary background information to put the technical aspects in correct relation to ecological criteria as the used primary energy for production, deconstruction strategies and avoiding construction waste.

During the practical part, the students can experience already realised projects as examples for sustainable retrofitting. The use of materials like straw, hemp, clay or reed will therefore be presented not only within the restrictions of their technical product profile, but also by hands-on experiences and discussions with involved planers and craftsmen.

Focus: Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) and Lifecycle Cost Analysis (LCCA)

Additional information

The units of theory are held as a blocked unit at the Vienna University of Technology. The practice units form a core of this event.  Examination: The successful participation in the LVA together with a short essay on the selected topics including the presentation is necessary in order to conclude the course of lectures positively.
