This course is in at least 1 assigned curriculum part of the STEOP.

2016W, LU, 2.0h, 2.5EC

Properties

  • Semester hours: 2.0
  • Credits: 2.5
  • Type: LU Laboratory Exercise

Aim of course

The lecture is meant to be a tool for the architectural survey of space and deals with all types of digital media, video, photography to create an interdisciplinary approach to space.

Visual, acoustic and tactile framing of existing sequences of space.

Sequences, haptics and atmospheres should be analysed and captured via photography and video.

Intentional perception and recording of given spaces, creation of a film including position schemes (=movement through space) that illustrates human seeing and movement.

Subject of course

An architectural dissection cuts a building into pieces and abstracts 3-dimensional spaces into a 2-dimensional plane. In this lecture a given space will be cut into pieces by moving through the space. This created movement should be shown and analytically illustrated.

By creating photgraphic takes of 25 frames per second the students will work with a given or chosen space in an analytical way. In a following step, the material will be interpreted and new perspectives to common space will be created.

"Architecture as sequence"

Project for the winterterm 2016/17: Wotruba Church (1974-76) Fritz Wotruba (Design), Fritz Gerhard Mayr (Planning, Development)
1230 Vienna, Georgenberg, Mauer (Rysergasse/Georgsgasse)

Methods like sequential movement, as well as photographic-cinematic approach towards prior ananlyzed space configurations and space intersections should be tested and compared with each other.

Topics: horizontal and vertical space configurations, construction, facade, material.

Presence at the CONCEPT PRESENTATION and TWO WORKSHOPS is MANDATORY! (please check the schedule of the course for your availability!)

One person for each project, groups of 2 students per theme can be discussed according to the concept and workload of the project.

The date for the visit of the project, where we will collect the raw footage for your final film, will be announced shortly.

An additional meeting can be arranged by mail if necessary or according to all participants we can add further meetings.

Examination modalities

conceptal approach, illustration of movement trajectories through the selected space, digital data (photo.jpf, file.fla, film.swf, film.avi)

Generation of an stop-motion-animation in (Flash)/Premiere/After Effects. The movement through the dissected space can be shown in the film or the examination of the found space configurations.
