Starting from a discussion of selected examples of various building types, the course offers an introduction into the analysis and specification of complex programs as well as an overview of contemporary planning methods. Building typology and associated design theories are not discussed as an authoritative encyclopedia of norms and regulations, instead they are conceived as a knowhow-base for programmatic innovations and new design methods, preparing students for a critical evaluation of conflicting design constraints.
History of building typology and associated design theories; function and place as design factors; typologic and diagrammatic design methods; algorithmic and parametric design methods; circulation systems; architecture without architects; big buildings; beyond building type: structural coupling vs. holism; post-functionalism. In the course of these thematic lectures a large number of public buildings is presented and analyzed.
