In the summer semester 2024, the following topic will be covered in the exercise practical fundamentals of heritage conservation: From heritage values to expert opinions. In fulfilling its task, heritage conservation can rely on a solid set of methodological tools, as well as legal frameworks that have been in place in the form of the Austrian Monument Protection Act since 1923. The assessment of the worthiness of a building for protection is based on the determination of values and is carried out by applying certain criteria: according to the Monument Protection Act, the worthiness of a monument for protection can be based on historical, artistic and/or cultural significance. This significance is recorded and argued in expert opinions, which demand unquestioned integrity and independence from the experts. These expert opinions serve not least as a basis for assessing the permissibility of subsequent interventions on the monument, and their preparation is thus a responsible task. The aim of the exercise is, in connection with the other offers of this module, to get to know the function(s) of an expert opinion and to prepare it. The focus is on object description, object evaluation with regard to monument protection legislation and justification of this evaluation. In the course of the semester, students work in groups to prepare an expert report on a selected building in Vienna.
