Subject of course

This is a core course of the Modul Cultural Spaces

Architecture is one of the reflections of people's culture and identity. It is influenced both by its environment and by the history, culture and needs of the people who design, build and use it. One of the effects of globalization led to a kind of uniformity in the built environment that made people forget the past and socio-cultural embeddedness.

Around the world to experience a need for a resurgence of its own root, which is also reflected in architecture. The search for one's own roots and a reflection on the collective memory can be observed especially after events in which a group of people try to overcome a trauma they have experienced together. Thus, the importance of cultural heritage was recognized after the world wars in the 20th century and led to the ratification of the World Heritage Convention.

A tool for the management and administration of World Heritage Sites is the definition and mapping of so-called attributes, which is currently gaining importance. Attributes are elements that describe the "Outstanding Universal Value" of a site in detail, which will be studied in this semester by drawing on the examples of two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, namely the "Borubudur Temple Compounds", Java, Indonesia and the "Historic Centre of Vienna", Austria. For the definition and mapping of attributes several methods have been developed around the world, some of which will be introduced in this course and subsequently applied to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. In addition to defining the attributes, it will equally be important to develop methods for making the attributes, once defined, available to a wide audience.
