Subject of course

Transformation and heritage # 01 Vienna in the reconstruction process.

The period between the destruction of the war and the early reconstruction after the Second World War represents not only a decisive phase in the transformation of cities over the past century, but is also recognized in recent research as a period of heritage making, as a moment of social negotiation and recognition of architectural heritage worthy of preservation. As part of the reconstruction planning, many decisions were taken on demolition and replacement buildings, which significantly altered the structure and appearance of the war-damaged old towns. Many buildings, especially outstanding and listed buildings, were rebuilt, while others were replaced by new ones despite less severe destruction.

It will be the students' task to investigate this structural process from the point of view of monument preservation, to deal with the transformation of selected areas of Vienna’s Old Town on the basis of a comprehensive research and analysis of sources (historical city maps, pictures and written documents, etc. ). Ultimately, the aim is also to understand the city as a structure undergoing change and transformation and to be able to recognise, interpret and evaluate the historical layers of the city.
