After successful completion of the course, students are able to meet the multiple requirements of an architectural design in a solution-oriented manner. This relates to the functional, spatial, ecological, social, creative, aesthetic, economic and technical challenges associated with architectural design.
The theme of the design program is the revitalization of the cellar lanes in the Weinviertel. The cellar lanes in Lower Austria (approx. 1,100 cellar lanes with an estimated 40,000 objects) represent an important testimony to the vernacular building culture of Lower Austria. In the course of industrialization, there was an economic transformation and the former small and micro-business structures of the winegrowers are not with recent processing methods in viticulture more compatible. This leads to the interesting question of how to deal with an identity-creating cultural asset that has lost its original use.
In the design we dedicate ourselves to a historical and current examination of the cultural asset Kellergassen and its potential use in the context of a revitalization for the region. On the one hand, this concerns the historical, socio-cultural, economic and touristic importance of this building type, which has not yet been researched to a great extent, and on the other hand, it also applies to the technical possibilities of dealing appropriately with this specific building structure (terrain terracing, cellar and press house typologies, historical building materials, renovation strategies, etc.)
This leads to the following questions:
- What possibilities of new use or economic valorization of the cellar lanes are there?- Which monument conservation requirements have to be observed for an intact ensemble effect and an authentic preservation of the cellar lanes?- What structural engineering measures are required for a professional, material-appropriate and ecologically sustainable renovation of the cellars and press houses?- Which architectural interventions, tailored to the respective press house typology, are possible / permissible for tourist or other use?
• Research (construction techniques, interviews, object search)• Documentation and measurement (as a design prerequisit)• Practical work on the object (getting to know the substance and the material)• Sketches, plans, visualizations, models
