After successful completion of the course, students are able to independently design a structurally and architecturally elaborated project and have gained the basic knowledge of research-based work.
This includes various methods such technical research, interdisciplinary application of instruments and tools, development of a methodical design strategy, as well as formally and technically correct in-depth formulation of a architectural design project.
The studio is about the development of innovative design concepts for a school, training and cultural center in Arua / Uganda. It is a cooperation project with the Austrian NGO DAMAWAS and its local partner organization DECCA. With the help of the local NGO, design criteria were developed that can be built upon in the course of the design.
The aim is to develop drafts that are designed to be sustainable in terms of the spatial program, materials, and social and cultural aspects and that respond optimally to the local conditions. The focus is on the development and project-wise integration of suitable construction methods, such as earth building technologies based on local earth building traditions.
In the course of a detailed questionnaire, the requirements were researched on site. Based on the results, the design should meet the following criteria:
- Development of sustainable building techniques tailored to locally available materials (clay, wood, bamboo)
- Integration of the usage requirements listed in the room plan (preschool, elementary school, vocational training center, cultural center, etc.)
- Room configuration: indoor-outdoor reference, light-shadow, visual references, arrangement of the building structure.
- Innovative design concepts with special consideration of the acceptance by the local population, status / prestige thinking, etc.
- Adaptation of the construction process to local conditions (hierarchies and decision-making processes, earning potential, process-based construction) with special consideration of the possibilities of long-term maintenance
- Adaptation of structural engineering details to the local possibilities
- Inclusion of the climatic conditions
- Well-developed concepts for the thermal quality of the building (ventilation, cooling), energy and water supply
- Concrete feasibility of the drafts in the local context
