After successful completion of the course, students are able to gain an overview of the history of heritage conservation and preservation of monuments and its theories and practices. The lecture opens up a wide professional horizon which enables students to understand the requirements of heritage conservation that are relevant today and to grasp the share expected from architects. Through the interaction of different perspectives, they recognise the significance and usefulness of the research area for scientific work and design. The lecture calls on students to evaluate their self-competence, assess their individual tendencies and interests and, in view of their future work in the profession, to sharpen their values, their ability to criticize and their special responsibility. Students acquire the ability to recognize similar problems and to place them in new contexts. The concrete illustration of the material enables the cultivation of visual memory and the linking of objects with relevant actors.
The lecture provides an overview in the history of preservation of monuments from their beginnings to heritage conservation today, its theories and practices. Reading, analysis and assessment of the historical building stock, conservation methods, approaches and strategies, the specific role of architects in the context of heritage conservation and preservation of historical monument are introduced.

written exam: Please note that the examination has to be written in German according to the lecture. To pass the exam, attending the lecture and preparing the required reading and additional texts is strongly recommended. You can find the lecture slides in TISS
Exam dates: at the end of the current semester and in the three following semesters. The dates will be announced after approval by the central teaching room administration.
