Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to independently work on scientific projects in the field of building research and to prepare texts in the subject area according to scientific standards. Students are also given the opportunity to learn structured scientific research from the first object analysis to the finished written work.

Subject of course

In order to become aware of the importance of scientific research, we will get an insight into the background of this topic. The importance of science is presented with an insight into the past and historical research paths that led to new discoveries. We will also deal with the research ethical principles and research methodology. After a brief overview of the importance of science and research, this course follows the entire process of creating a scientific paper. We start with the timing of the entire process, followed by the techniques and methods of literature research and general source collection. In addition, the importance of correct citation and different citation styles is presented. Afterwards, an overview of the structure of a scientific paper is shown and the contents of individual parts are discussed. After the process of writing an academic paper, the possibilities are presented to disseminate one's own work to a larger audience in the form of a presentation and publication.

Teaching methods

The course should be held according to the "flipped classroom" principle. For each subject area, the students are provided with short videos in which the team of the Institute for Art History, Building Research and Monument Preservation will summarize and present the steps of scientific research and writing from their own perspective in an interesting way. The course content accompanies the processes of own research or the writing of seminar papers and offers easy application of the learned content.
