Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to deal creatively with historical buildings, because all design work on protected structures requires specific expertise and appropriate strategies. This course offers students the opportunity to study the manifold requirements that are needed to conserve, restore, renovate and administrate a historic monument.

Subject of course

Schüttkasten Ernstbrunn

The town of Ernstbrunn is located 50 kilometers to the north of Vienna and has one of the most exciting castle ensembles in Lower Austria - the Ernstbrunn Castle. The history of this complex has its origins in the 11th century and can be seen in its multi-faceted architecture, which is, however, dominated by the Empire style from the last intensive period of alterations under Prince Prosper of Sinzendorf around the transition from the 18th to the 19th century.

This splendid edifice is located to the northwest of the center of Ernstbrunn, the eponymous town of the Weinviertel district. It is surrounded by an English garden and is hardly visible to people passing by. The only hint of the complex is an imposing baroque granary - the Schüttkasten of Ernstbrunn Palace. Many buildings of this kind were built in the second half of the 17th and at the beginning of the 18th century and have since then shaped the Lower Austrian agricultural landscape to the north of the Danube. Since the change in grain storage technology in the second half of the 20th century they have increasingly been replaced by silos and in unfavorable cases are left functionless to decay. Their small windows and remarkable room sizes, which are typical for this type of building often make the search for a new use difficult.

The Schüttkasten of Ernstbrunn Palace has a similar fate. At the moment, the building is in need of renovation and is hardly used at all. The current lord of the castle, Prince Heinrich XIV Reuss, is therefore looking for new functions so that this building can continue to be preserved as a testimony to the agricultural and cultural history of the community. This is the central task that we have set ourselves with our design studio. Architectural considerations, the preservation of the existing buildings and clever structural interventions should make this possible.

Excursion: Two one-day trips to Ernstbrunn will allow us to work directly on the object. Additional excursions and visits are also planned.

The course takes place with the participation of Dipl. Ing. Oliver Schreiber (BDA).
