After successful completion of the course, students are able to formulte crucial aspect of the cultural heritage in austria and they will be trained to evaluate a given site with existing historical architecture (this semster the Bürgerspital in Weitra) . They will be capable of developping an original design project according to given tasks and prepare a comprehensive concept as well as a successful artistic design solution that demosntrates knowldge and respect for the cultural heritage.

Revitalisation of the Bürgerspitals in Weitr, lower Austria

This semester we are devoting ourselves to the revitalization of the historic citizens' hospital in Weitra. The former Bürgerspital zum Heiligengeist was founded in 1340 and built by the town judge Chunrat Marchart as a place of care for old, sick and impoverished citizens. It was later adapted in the Baroque style (1729 to 1731). A medieval granary and the Gothic hospital church with wall paintings from the 14th century were preserved. A painting in the doorway refers to the patron saint: the Holy Spirit is depicted as a dove landing. The existing architectural ensemble is to be complemented by the new building in a compatible manner and give the site a positive impetus.

There will be an excursion to inspect the site.

Midterm Presentaion May 2nd, at 10:00 at TU Wien

In this class students will apply standard methods of architecture documentation like measuring methods, photo documentation, literature research, formal analyses, typology. Methods refer to the built matter as well as to the theoretical level and imply a historical, contextual programmatic approach.

In case of a different Corona situation the class will be held online.

A comprehensive anlyses and documenation of the hitsorical architecture on site as well as a original design project. Required material includes a booklet, plans, sections, facade drawings, 3D renderings and perhaps a short movie.

After the final presentation in Weitra in June 2024 you will receive the final grade.

Presentation-posters  as Pdf, 1-2 Posters size  70*100, vertical, printed for final presentation in Perchtoldsdorf.
Everything needs to be uploaded in TUWEL as well.
