After successful completion of the course, students are able to analyse the various earth building techniques (clay brick, cob, rammed earth, infill techniques, earth loaf building, etc.) that have established themselves worldwide in their regional context and compare them on a meta-level. The students learn to understand the development of the individual earth building techniques, which often developed independently of each other in distant regions, depending on the available source material as well as climatic and craft conditions. Since the industrial revolution, earth from building materials has been pushed back worldwide and replaced by other materials. For ecological reasons (climate change, scarcity of resources, healthy indoor climate, etc.) it is time to pay new attention to earth building. The aim of the seminar is to create a new awareness both of the value of historical loam buildings and the potential of new earthen structures.
In the summer semester 2023, we will deal with the contents of the second Austrian earthen building conference. This conference will take place on 24.3. at the Architekturzentrum Wien. Austrian and international earth building experts will exchange ideas on recent and future developments in building with earth. Earth building is currently experiencing an enormous upswing in the course of the discussion about circular building forms and it is time to anchor this construction method in the mainstream of building. This required consideration of future education, regulations and standards, new fields of research, and necessary measures to enable large-scale dissemination of earth building techniques.
In the seminar, introductory lectures provide a basic knowledge that should enable students to contextualize, analyze, and critique the presentations and discussions at the earthen building conference. The earthen building conference forms the basis for further discussions and the preparation of the proceedings.

The performance consists of an intensive content analysis of the contributions and the recent earthen building topics at the 1st Austrian Earthen Building Conference. The lectures at the earthen building conference are listened to by the individual students, written down, analyzed in terms of content and summarized. Thus, the students are not only up to date with regard to today's earthen building, but can also critically contribute to the discourse on possible future developments.
