Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to analyse the various earth building techniques (clay brick, cob, rammed earth, infill techniques, earth loaf building, etc.) that have established themselves worldwide in their regional context and compare them on a meta-level. The students learn to understand the development of the individual earth building techniques, which often developed independently of each other in distant regions, depending on the available source material as well as climatic and craft conditions. Since the industrial revolution, earth from building materials has been pushed back worldwide and replaced by other materials. For ecological reasons (climate change, scarcity of resources, healthy indoor climate, etc.) it is time to pay new attention to earth building. The aim of the seminar is to create a new awareness both of the value of historical loam buildings and the potential of new earthen structures.

Subject of course

Focal topic SS 2020:

Earth Architecture as World Heritage

Of the 869 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, 150 (17%) are at least partially made of earth, with a disproportionate number of which can be found on the Red List of Cultural Objects at Risk. Organizations such as the UNESCO Chair for Earthen Architecture or WHEAP, UNESCO's World Heritage Earthen Architecture Program, are concerned with the preservation and conservation of these buildings. This is a particular challenge for an architecture that is mostly process-based and changeable due to the building material earth and is always discussed controversially.

This semester, we not only deal with the various earth building techniques that are used in the individual World Heritage Sites and the options for their preservation, but also with what constitutes a World Heritage Site (OUV - Outstanding Universal Value etc.) and how and why Monument is listed as a World Heritage Site. Individual World Heritage Sites are compared by students in the form of presentations.
