Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to understand functional principles of historic building systems and constructional details and recognize qualities in these iteratively evolved systems.

Subject of course

The lecture series historic.smart aims to provide students with an introduction into exceptional functional principles of historic buildings. Through enabling of physical precepts and specific material properties shown examples prove to be highly efficient. As antithesis to software-controlled building equipment and composite Materials found in current constructions, the elegance of simplicity as well as possibilities and limitations of such systems are shown to encourage a critical discourse about technophile solutions in today's architecture.

As participation to lectures and contribution to discussions are a central part of this course and there will be no written exam in regard to the content of lectures, only an individual paper with an own contribution to the topic, online-attendance is mandatory. All lectures will be streamed online via Zoom and mandatory attendance is in regard to the online-meeting. Students not participating in lectures will have their place in the course given to someone in the waiting-list. In case of limited possibility of participation due to work or internship pleace reach out to us.

Nevertheless, if individual speakers give their permission lectures and discussion will be recorded and made available via TUWEL for a limited time (10 days).

historisch.smart will be held on Thursday, February 3rd 2022 and Friday, February 4th 2022 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. via Zoom;

there will be no lectures in the lecture hall due to latest COVID-19 developments

Additional information

Due to the large number of lecturers it can not be guaranteed, that all of them will agree to make a recording of their presentation. Therefore attendence to historisch.smart and the participation in polls held during the lecture days is mandatory for receiving grading to the course.

From 12 lectures in total, 3 can be missed without concequeces. The student session is understood as one lecture for that purpose.

For four additional lectures a review can be handed in (via TUWEL) to supplement participation. Therefore a maximum of 6 lectures (~50%) can be missed and it is still possible to receive a course certificate. A attendence to 50% of the study days is seen as a required minimum.
