Subject of course

The topics of this semester are:

Topic 1) World Heritage Sites in Austria

In 1972, UNESCO ratified the World Heritage Convention  with 193 states to create an instrument for the protection of the cultural and natural heritage of the world.

Currently there are 9 sites in Austria that have been recognized as sites of outstanding universal value. Each state that hosts a World Heritage Site committed themselves to obtain this universal value through legal framework conditions.

In many cases, this means a challenge for architecture and planning, as it could be observed in the controversial discussion concerning the Hotel at Heumarkt in Vienna in recent years.

Within this course there is the possibility to with questions of architecture and / or planning in one of the World Heritage Sites in Austria using a film documentary.

Topic 2) Architecture of the 20th century in Lower Austria

Friedrich Achleitner has begun a comprehensive work with his volumes “Österreichische Architektur im 20. Jahrhundert“, which clearly summarizes the built fabric in Austria from the last century. Achleitner was able to compile volumes in his active time  consisting 8 of the 9 federal states of Austria.

The data for Lower Austria has been collected, but so far not prepared accordingly. Within the frame of a joint  project in cooperation with Mag. Dietmar Steiner, the Architekturzentrum Wien and the Stiftung Morgen, the archive will be analysed and prepared according Friedrich Achleitner’s ideas.

Accompanying the project, students can approach the topic with the medium of film. Possible topics range fro the documentation of described objects, the accompaniment of the project or a portrait of Friedrich Achleitner.
