Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to...

- to critically engage with the representation of architecture in film

- analyse how film can influence the perception of architecture

Subject of course

This semester the focus of the LVA is on the representation and perception of Chinese architecture in film.

The built environment has an important and often underestimated role in movies. The selection of locations and shots conveys a certain image that is intended to enable the viewer to locate the plot in cultural terms. This can take place in a variety of forms, from a subtle, casual camera work over acityscape or a staged representation of a well-known monument.

On the basis of selected cinema films, students will analyse how the built environment in China is presented. The spectrum ranges from topics with a historical background to recent stories.

The background knowledge provided by the other LVAs in the module will be used for a critical analysis of the extent to which the respective presentation in the film reflects a realistic image or a stereotypical transfer of architecture in China and the extent to which this contributes to an understanding of the plot.

This intensive discussion is intended to shape the understanding of the significance of the characteristics of the built environment and their representation.
