After successful completion of the course, students are able to recapitulate Austria's architectural history during the 19th and 20th centuries, incorporating the cultural, social and political environment and paying special account to "new" tasks in the field of technical and social infrastructure.

Subject of course

Presentation of the development of Austrian architecture from circa 1800 to 2000 on the basis of a division into types of building: Introduction - Military and civilian buildings of rulers and the state - Private representative and residential buildings - Company houses, settlements and terrace housing - Apartment blocks, small and large-scale housing estates - Building for trade and commerce - Locations of services and production - Building for transport systems and technical infrastructure - Hospitals, institutional homes and hotels - Buildings for education and learning - Exhibition buildings - Cultural venues (theatres, music halls, etc.) - religious and memorial structures

Teaching methods

The lecture is presented by means of power-point, containing a combination between sometimes historic photographies and technical plans with city maps. The most important hard facts are summarized through the legends of the pictures and plans. Each lecture is started with a short introduction into the building historyof Austria  before 1800 and explains the structure of the current lecture.

Before starting the lecture term, a brief summary of each lecture and an extent list of sources is launched via TISS and TUWEL. This overview also contains the necessary explanation of the examination mode and gives all offered options for examination during the upcoming academic year.

Examination modalities

The examination is carried out in writing via TUWEL. For the lectures held, comprehension questions are asked in German, which are to be answered in writing in German or English.

The examination dates offered are such that the lecture series is completed first (end of January-beginning of February, March, May). There are no special dates with a special mode. You can therefore only register for the dates offered. Anyone who registers and fails to attend an exam will be blocked from registering for the following date.

Instead of the written examination, a substitute written work can be written. The topic must be discussed in advance with the lecturer via email. Detailed information can be found under Communication - Documents and in the TUWEL in the corresponding section "Replacement work" !!
