Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to classify and evaluate sacred spaces and places in terms of architectural history and functional typology. (Group 1)

Group 1: criss-CROSSing the Weinviertel region

The landscape of the Weinviertel region around Vienna is characterised by buildings and signs of faith and religiosity from the Middle Ages to the present day. Roads and country lanes are lined with shrines, chapels, (pilgrimage) churches and monasteries. The kaleidoscope of sacred places and buildings on our excursion is complemented by the Leeberg (Hallstatt tumulus), the oldest medieval synagogue in Austria in Korneuburg, the baroque Calvary in Pillersdorf and current projects on sacred art and architecture.
In a world in which popular piety is gradually being replaced by cultural Christianity and the architecture of faith is perceived only as listed monuments, we will take a look at the most diverse architectural and spatial expressions of religious interpretation of what has been understood as 'sacred' in the past –– and discuss current trends with experts on site.

The findings will be discussed in the light of today's trend of people leaving the church and the associated increasing loss of function and superfluousness of sacred architecture and art -- and the results will be presented in a mini-exhibition at the LandUni Schloss Drosendorf.

Group 2 Farmhouses Steiermark - Kärnten

After successful completion of the course, students are able to subject building fabric to a critical evaluation. They are able to independently categorise objects within the discourse and carry out a comprehensive evaluation. (Group 2)

We will visit various architectures and places typical of the region and document and analyse them photographically and by means of surveys, sketches and interviews.

Subject of course

Group 1: criss-CROSSing the Weinviertel region

In contrast to the more theoretical and sublimating transfer of knowledge in lectures and seminars, the architectural art excursions focus on encounters with sacred buildings in their real-life manifestations and their structural and historical complexity. The different architectural backgrounds of the various religions are analysed individually.

Group 2 Farmhouses Steiermark - Kärnten

In contrast to the more theoretical and sublimating knowledge transfer in lectures and seminars, this architecture excursion focuses on encounters with rural architecture in its real-life manifestations and its structural and historical complexity. Architectural cultural backgrounds are analysed using selected objects.

Teaching methods

Group 1: criss-CROSSing the Weinviertel region

Depending on the theme of the excursion, the participants choose a building or object during the visit that they would like to present individually or in groups. They have one day to present this topic on site in the form of a poster, a drawing, an installation or a PowerPoint presentation. After the excursion, the experiences are summarised in a final discussion.

Gruppe 2

Depending on the topic of the excursion, the participants will choose a building or object during their visit, which they will document individually or in groups in the form of building survey and interviews with property owners. Results of the building survey and the interviews will be further prepared and analysed in the course 251.834 Kollaboratives Arbeiten :: Vernakuläre Architektur. The on-site work will take three to four days, depending on the size of the object/s.
