Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to... critically examine the potential of historical building forms and techniques as well as building materials and their development and current use today. The focus is on buildings in the hot and arid regions of Iran.

Subject of course

Students will not only have the opportunity to learn about traditional materials such as mud and brick and historic building forms, such as inward and outward-facing structures, such as Andaruni and Biruni in all their facets in Iran, but also to become familiar with all projects and processes in the context of conservation and conversion under maintenance. Furthermore, they will be exposed to the different approaches and complexities of transforming historical forms/materials in contemporary architecture. This will be achieved by visiting already completed and internationally recognized projects as well as by talking to the architects on site.

During the two-week trip to Iran, focusing on the desert cities of Yazd and Isfahan in central Iran, which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the students, in cooperation with colleagues from the universities of Yazd and Isfahan, will make proposals for the conservation, restoration and revitalization of Kharanagh Village (north-east of Yazd province) in the form of sketches, photographs and short films, and through workshops with traditional materials, visits and discussions with local people.

Teaching methods

According to the thematic orientation of the excursion, in the introductory part each participant prepares for a visit to a building or an aspect relating to the content of the excursion, and then presents the result in the form of a short paper. During the excursion itself, this preparation is the basis for dealing with and discussing the respective object/topic on site.
