Aim of course

Participatory Building: Lehm-Café in Düsseldorf

Coupled course: 251.786 Exkursion zur Baukunst II and 251.714 SE Comparative cultural analysis - 1: 1 clay seminar

Project coordination: Ute Reeh (artist), Prof. Eike Roswag (ZRS Architekten Ingenieure, Berlin)

The construction of the so-called "Wiesencafé" is an interdisciplinary art project. The site is located in a district isolated from the city in the south of Dusseldorf. The design for the café was developed jointly by children and architecture students to create an open, communicative place. It will be built out of earth, a material that is ideal for experimentation and for DIY. The cob technique, a mixture of straw and earth, makes it possible to build without complicated technical aids. All it takes is know-how, physical commitment, communication, cohesion and perseverance. The total construction time is 8 weeks, spread over the period from March to September. We will be involved in the construction process from 11.-14.6.2019 (after Pentecost). Subject of course

In the course of the preparatory seminar (1:1 Lehmbauseminar), the theoretical basics of earth building (historical development, various mud building techniques, material properties, processing methods, etc.) are taught. The excursion focuses on the hands-on experience in dealing with the material earth. This includes:

  • Checking the earth quality
  • Preparation of a suitable earth / straw mixture
  • Efficiency in the processing of the material
  • Applying and compacting the material
  • Solutions for details and connections  etc.

In addition to these "hard skills" within the construction process, the "soft skills" are also of particular importance. Participatory processes only succeed if the communication between the various actors (architecture students, pupils, neighbors, etc.) works and the social competencies of being together are addressed and trained.
