The aim of excursions in the history of architecture and building is to encourage a direct, critical confrontation with architectural and urban objects of our constructed environment. Broad, reflected understanding is achieved by preparation of relevant topics and discussion with colleagues and teachers. In contrast to a more theoretical and elevated transmission of knowledge in lectures and seminars, the focus of excursions is placed on confrontation with constructed architecture and its real and historically complex manifestations. Depending on the individual main course subjects with which the excursions are combined visits will be made to groups of buildings that are defined by their specific interrelations with historical, cultural, constructive or typological contexts.
Corresponding to the overall emphasis of the excursion, each participant will conduct research about a building to be visited or a specific aspect of the general topic and will present his/her findings as a contribution to group discussion before setting out on the trip. During the excursion this preparation will serve as the basis for an investigation into and lively discussion about various aspects of the selected buildings and topics. After returning, students experiences will be summarised and presented in a concluding session.
