All design work on protected structures requires specific expertise and appropriate strategies. This course offers students the opportunity to study the manifold requirements that are needed to conserve, restore, renovate and administrate a historic monument.
The "Gschirrhof" in Klosterneuburg was the access yard of the Klosterneuburg Monastery. Situated close to the monastery, it accommodated the stables, a craft business and living quarters. The oldest parts date back to the 13th century, while most of the buildings were built in the 17th century and the 19th century. Today, much of it is vacant. Appropriate utilisation for the historic rooms is needed. Where necessary, designs that are compliant with the principles of monument preservation should be developed. These designs should conserve the existing structures, as well as allow for new functions.
