ARCHITECTURE and DEVELOPMENT - Building in a Globalised World
It is the aim of the lecture to view architecture under global perspectives and to generate interconnectivities on a holistic level. The 21st century is introducing a new phase of globalism and possible responses in architecture are discussed controversially. The following key questions will be examined: What are the future challenges of an architecture which is cross-linked throughout the world? Adequate living space as a human right? What are the challenges of building in economically disadvantaged regions? Does architecture bear social and cultural responsibility? Do other cultures have architectural answers that we do not have or do they ask architectural questions, we have not even thought about?
The lecture series consists of regular lectures combined with guest lectures. Whereas the regular lectures concentrate on the theoretical background and the terminology, the guest lectures give insight into practical field work and open the forum for discussions. Guest lecturers will be anthropologists, development planners and architects who plan and build in less developed countries.
In the lectures, special emphasis is placed on interdisciplinary linkage. "Architecture has become too important to be left to architects," said Giancarlo de Carlo in the 1960s. Within the architectural discipline, it is no longer possible to tackle the increasingly complex tasks on one's own. Examples and methods from the cultural and social sciences are presented which can be used profitably in architecture.
Architecture is defined as a carrier of meaning that is treated, constructed and interpreted differently in the respective cultures. Architecture expresses how a culture, a social group, experiences itself, embodies its ideals and the way they are received by others. Thus architecture is more than purpose and construction - it represents a way of life, the self-perception of people and thus their identity.
Furthermore, the importance of socially committed architecture is emphasized, which becomes clear beyond the star architecture as an independent movement in the contemporary architectural scene, which consciously deals with the new theoretical approaches and practical demands on building and goes beyond the Euro-American-centred architectural perception. For example, the question of what position architects occupy in construction processes in less developed regions is itself the subject of systematic research. Beyond the technical components, the social and cultural processes as well as the mediating role of the architect are highlighted.
The focus is on architecture on a human scale, in its profound, everyday significance, beyond norms, laws and high-tech systems. Architecture that allows creativity and invention and conveys long-term cultural values based on social processes.
