After successful completion of the course, students are able to critically question and independently apply basic scientific working methods and concepts of the subject Building History.
At the end of the course the students will be given an overview of the subdivision of ancient cities and their development and transformation over the centuries with a special focus on the position and architecture of sepulchral buildings.
This LVA is linked to LVA 251.778 Exkursion on Special Topics of Architecture (winter semester), that mean pracence by the Exkursion is mandatory!!!
The focus of the LVA is on the origin of the different types of mausoleums in the Mediterranean region: individual case studies - concerning Greek, Etruscan and Roman culture - are presented and discussed. An insight into the development of the concept of tomb buildings from antiquity to the present is given. In particular, the topographical locations of necropolises and tombs as well as the emergence and development of the modern cemetery up to the present day are considered.
An oral presentation as well as drawings about a chosen grave construction are required. In addition to completing the LVA, students will be able to critically question and independently apply basic scientific working methods and concepts in the field of architectural history.
Working methods, collecting material in archives and libraries, source study and source criticism, hypothesis formation, writing, drawing.
This LVA is coupled with LVA "251.778 Excursion on special topics in architecture (winter semester)".
The LVA is offered as a block lecture in LIVE FORMAT during November-December.

After an introduction to the building concept of the ancient city and focus on selected aspects, students will deal with a selected topic.
A written submission and an oral presentation will be required from the students:
1) written submission in publication form:
- an exposé + abstract (2-3 pages with bibliography excl. illustrations)
- a poster with at least 2 different drawing methods (sketches, axonometries, 3D models...)
2) oral presentation of the work: 10 min. presentation + 5 min. discussion
