Labuan Bajo, West Manggarai Flores is the entrance to the National Park Komodo, which has been enlisted as a World Heritage site because of its outstanding universal value as a natural landscape in 1993. The region has been visited by an average number of 50.000 people per year since until. After that the Indonesian government launched an initiative to focus on 10 regions in Indonesia to copy the economic success of Bali as a tourist destination, with Labuan Bajo being one of them. The aim was to increase the number of visitors to 500.000 per year until 2019. By 2016 already 120.000 tourists travelled to Komodo as the results of focussed campaigns by the government, Aside of that the government focussed on developments in infrastructure as a new airport or new roads. But the accelerated increase in Toursim also caused a number of problems for the region: water supply, waste management, land grabbing, loss of identity or urban sprawl, to name just a few.
Within the frame of an interdisciplinary, international workshop students and staff of TU Wien and Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta Indonesia will work together with local stakeholders and representatives of the local government on capacity building measures in architecture and planning.
Representatives of the National University of Singapore, the University of Technology, Sydney and the New York City University worked already in the region and will participate as guest lecturers.
