MODULE 2020/21

In the 2020/21 winter semester, the architecture and art history module is dedicated to the Austrian baroque architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach (1656–1723).

The seminar “Deepening Architectural History” analyzes the theoretical and practical work of the Austrian court architect in the context of international baroque architecture. On the one hand, the focus is on his “draft of a historical architecture” published in book form in 1721, the first attempt to present an overview of important buildings from the past. On the other hand, he is interested in his designs and buildings, which have a strikingly wide typological breadth and should be viewed as examples (including in Vienna: Karlskirche, court library, court stables, Palais Trautson, winter riding school, drafts for palaces, pleasure houses and ephemeral buildings). Questions are not only aimed at the relationship between theoretical and built work, but also have to take into account the client and their representational ideas. Another point of discussion should be the extent to which Fischer von Erlach's quotations from historical architecture - see for example the triumphal columns in front of the Karlskirche - foresee later concepts of the postmodern discussion.

The course "Project seminar and seminar workshop" is coordinated with the advanced seminar and is intended to enable module participants to deepen their knowledge by working together on background knowledge and to provide a forum for joint discussions on this year's research topic. Together we will discuss basic texts and visit selected historical architectural representations and tracts in archives during excursions. In addition, the students are supported in transferring the results of their work from the seminar “Deepening Architectural History” to posters and presenting them in a poster exhibition at the end of the semester.

In addition to our range of seminars, in the lecture series “Current Trends in Architecture” we want to highlight and discuss contemporary aspects, questions of monument preservation and current research fields together with invited experts.

In the module-accompanying course "Methodology and Terminology", basic scientific working methods, specialist terminology and methodologies of the subject of art history are taught. As a result, the participants with regard to the presentations to be given in the advanced seminar and the homework to be written.
