Subject of course

The module Architecture and Art History in the winter semester 2019/20 is dedicated to the histpry of the residential building. In the seminar "Deepening the History of Architecture", we work together with the students to gain an overview of the multifaceted history of the building task using exemplary buildings. On focus are its typological characteristics, its changing social significance, as well as various design and usage practices, which always provide clues to the historically changing concepts of urbanity, a social and usage history, and the tension between the public and the private sphere.

Since the history of housing and residential buildings is closely linked to socio-cultural and urban developments, the buildings and projects presented by the students in the form of lectures will not only be described and contextualized, but also examined with regard to their social significance, their urban embedding and their specific features of use. At the end of the semester, a seminar paper will be prepared.

The course project seminar and seminar workshop is coordinated with the in-depth seminar and should enable the module participants to deepen their knowledge through the joint development of background knowledge and provide a forum for joint discussions on the subject of residential architecture and buildings. Together we will discuss basic texts and analyse selected Viennese residential buildings in front of the original. The students will transfer the results of their work from the seminar "Deepening the History of Architecture" to posters and present them in a poster exhibition at the end of the semester.

In addition to our seminar programme, in which we focus on the historical and typological development of the architectural task since antiquity, the lecture series Aktuelle Tendenzen in der Architektur (Current Tendencies in Architecture) aims to present and discuss contemporary aspects, monument conservation issues and current fields of research together with invited experts.

In the course Methodology and Terminology, which accompanies the modules, fundamental scientific working methods, technical terms and methods of art history will be taught. In this way, the participants are supported in preparing for the presentations to be given in the in-depth seminar and the term papers to be written.
