The students become more familiar with the concept of "townscape" and the relevant instrument of "protected areas". These include the updated survey, the recognition of different types of current transformation and the corresponding visualization as well as the learning of the evaluation criteria (and the potential for conflict) for the management of protected areas (changing spaces). Finally, a scientifically based and clear analysis shall be conducted with particular reference to "authorized" and "unauthorized" structural changes in protected areas.
Protected areas are not only a tool of urban planning, which allows it to control structural needs, but also directly refers to preservation goals. Protected areas are usually meant to preserve and develop the historic city. Based on a selection of specific examples of protected areas in Vienna, we want to improve the quality of buildings and ensembles located in protected areas, to name and to analyze them, despite potential conflicts and changing needs.
