After successful completion of the course, students are able to apply basic knowledge to photographic objects (19th-21st century). As part of this course, the most important photographic collections in Vienna are visited and outstanding photographic works and groups of works are viewed, analysed and discussed. It is essential to work in front of originals in order to familiarise ourselves with and explore their technical and content-related characteristics, as well as to develop a critical attitude towards images.

After an introductory session, students are given an insight into seven Viennese photographic collections. Through direct confrontation with the originals, students are given an overview from the early days of photography to the present day. In addition to the specific content of the images, the respective museum and collection histories and archiving are discussed.

Discussion in front of originals, encouragement to see and describe works of art independently. Encouragement to discuss and ask questions and to formulate these adequately.
