After successful completion of the course, students are able to participate in the discourse on exemplary special topics in architectural history argumentatively and apply scientific working methods independently.
In the 2020/21 winter semester, the architecture and art history module is dedicated to the Austrian baroque architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach (1656–1723).
The seminar “Deepening Architectural History” analyzes the theoretical and practical work of the Austrian court architect in the context of international baroque architecture. On the one hand, the focus is on his “draft of a historical architecture” published in book form in 1721, the first attempt to present an overview of important buildings from the past. On the other hand, he is interested in his designs and buildings, which have a strikingly wide typological breadth and should be viewed as examples (including in Vienna: Karlskirche, court library, court stables, Palais Trautson, winter riding school, drafts for palaces, pleasure houses and ephemeral buildings). Questions are not only aimed at the relationship between theoretical and built work, but also have to take into account the client and their representational ideas. Another point of discussion should be the extent to which Fischer von Erlach's quotations from historical architecture - see for example the triumphal columns in front of the Karlskirche - foresee later concepts of the postmodern discussion.
