After successful completion of the course, students are able to engage in research and design with post-war modern administrative buildings. The case study requires a decided transformation, which is thematised in the course between the poles of component recycling and appreciation as a listet building.
The exercise offers students the opportunity to deal with the diverse requirements and instruments that must be met when recycling components, repairing and carefully developing an existing building. Students get to know the different perspectives of those involved, analyse the spatial context and the building and practise weighing up conservation and development measures.
Since November 2022, the Kagran district center on Schrödingerplatz in Vienna's 22nd district has been approved for demolition after only 55 years. The remaining tenants are expected to vacate the building by mid-2025. The aim is to create a so-called “climate-friendly district with affordable living space and many meeting places”. The City of Vienna offices previously housed there aready moved out to another location. Their rooms were handed over to the Vienna Housing Fund as part of a donation with the aim of further development. Only the Donaustadt adult education center with a district library, a youth center and a pharmacy are still represented on the site.
As early as 2011, the Kagran center was declared an urban development target area in order to draw attention to characteristic development potential, opportunities and challenges. The Kagran Center urban development area extends from the Alte Donau to Kagraner Platz and is intended to develop into a high-quality district center for the Donaustadt. The core area of the Kagran target area includes the area between Dr.-Adolf-Schärf-Platz and Schrödingerplatz.
