Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to deal creatively with historical buildings, because all design work on protected structures requires specific expertise and appropriate strategies. This course offers students the opportunity to study the manifold requirements that are needed to conserve, restore, renovate and manage a historic monument.

Subject of course

Swimming at the lake again

The indoor swimming pool in Neusiedl am See, opened in 1977, is located just outside the town centre, on the edge of the reed belt of Lake Neusiedl. The bathing facility is the only completed building of the planned recreation centre, which was intended to include also a congress centre and other functions. Built according to the design of the architects Stelzer and Hutter, the structure is one of the important representatives of Brutalism in Burgenland and has recently been listed as a historical monument. The construction consists of a base storey in exposed concrete and a supporting wooden structure. The façade of the bathing floor opens up to the surrounding reed landscape with large glass surfaces.
After more than 40 years of continuous use, the building is now empty. No structural changes have been made in the area of the central sports pool since its completion. The pool has thus largely been preserved in its original condition, but it is also in need of maintenance measures and adaptation to today's usage needs and technical requirements for a public pool.

The central task of our design course in the winter semester 2023/24 is, after a comprehensive analysis and evaluation of the existing building, to conceive and implement a compatible and sustainable further use of the pool with suitable secondary uses (teams of two). The design task includes not only structural measures within the existing structure, but also a planned expansion of the bathing area to include an additional pool suitable for competitive swimming and the subsequent use and possible careful redesign of the extensive outdoor area, which also dates from the 1970s.

Exkursion:
