Sepulchral Architecture on the Via Appia Antica in Rome!
Seminar 251.142 "History of Architectur and /Building Archaeology" is a core subject of the module of the same name. His aim is to focus on the semester's main topic in greater depth in the context of building archaeology, of history of urban development and construction history.
In WS 2017/18, the seminar deals with sepulchral architecture in Roman antiquity in accordance with the subject of the building survey - including the so-called "Beretta del Prete" on the Via Appia Antica. Catacombs, mausoleums, but also the smaller tombs (in Rome and Ostia antica) are therefore the focus of the seminar. The significance of tomb and "memoria" in antiquity, the burial customs and rites naturally had a direct impact on the architecture, the functional typologies and the location of the tombs. At the same time, they are a mirror of the society of this epoch, which not only allows today's people to understand building habits and grave culture, but also allows them to get close to personal and emotionally touching events of this long past time.
In addition, the seminar also deals with the individual buildings examined, especially in terms of material and construction. The many different small-scale architectures along the Via Appia Antica, which, as ruins in different states of decay, preservation and restoration, openly reveal the respective wall techniques and the use of building materials, represent optimal documentation and analysis objects. Here you can also discuss (and hopefully even clarify) open research questions on construction processes, site logistics, the production processes of the individual building materials, etc.!
Last not least is the Via Appia Antica one of the most important examples of the Roman "Parchi Archeologici" for the current trend in the conservation of historical monuments and tourism development from open-air museums to the culturally oriented amusement parks.
