Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky, who celebrated her 100. Birthday in 1997, was the first Austrian woman who studied at the University of applied Arts- formerly known as k.k. Kunstgewerbeschule.  Gustav Klimt, a friend of her mother helped her to get into school by writing a letter of recommendation. She studied under Oskar Strnad, who was an important pionier of social housing in Vienna and who inspired her to focus on functional and social aspects in architecture.

 

In this seminar we will take a look at her various concepts and projects in functional housing and her scientific approaches.

Students will write an academic paper (Bachelor Thesis) to this topic.

The course is bilingual (German/English) and subdivided into three main parts. The units will be detailed further at the beginning of the semester.

a) Supervised research and formulation of a research question
b) Independent research and writing of an academic abstract
c) Oral presentation of the state of the art, construction of the argument and writing of the final paper
