Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, students are able to actively and self-reliantly contribute to a building documentation using laser scanning. A basic understanding of surveying as well as processes concerning laser scanning and photogrammetry is achieved for students to assess possibilities, limits and applications by themselves. Further, students are able to process the surveying-data (so called pointclouds) into architectural drawings as well as 3D-models.

Subject of course

This course is part of [SIQ!] Bauforschung.Denkmalpflege

As a first step the lecture part of the course deals with the basics of photogrammetry and 3D-laser scanning and explains the processes of manifacturing architektural drawings and 3D models from such data.

Afterwards follows the practical application of devices for building documentation as well as the processing of collected data into 3D-models, architectural drawings and rectified elevations in support to courses combined with this one (varies according to group).

Topic in WS 2019:

> > > Group 1a+b: sepulcral architecture along the Via Appia Antica -

in combination with 251.691 Modul Baugeschichte und Bauforschung

The participation in the documentation of sepulcral architecture along the Via Appia Anitca is joint with the rest of the courses of Modul Baugeschichte Bauforschung. Further information can be found in the respective course.

> > > Group 2: The cupula of the Wiener Karlskirche -

optional combination with 251.095 Bauaufnahme I

concerning the cupula of the Wiener Karlskriche: In the winter term 2019, the course deals with the wooden dome structure of the Karlskirche. The Karlskirche was built from 1716 to 1737 according to the design by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach. After his death in 1723, his son Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach took over the completion of the building and partially changed the plans. The roof structure of the outer dome is almost completely preserved from the construction period and has many features of baroque carpentry.

After introductory meetings on the 8th and 15th of October 2019 9-12 a.m. Sem251 students will visit the cupola in small groups together with lecturers (max 2-3 students) to document the sometimes very narrow roofwork. Further, documentation will be done inside the church and at the basis of the cupola to cover the interior, as well as positions in the vicinity of the church to scan the exterior. Work with the laserscanner on site will be done in groups in single full-day sessions in the week between 21st and 25th of October 2019.

During individual meetings the collected data will later be processed into sections, plans and elevations from the pointcloud and passed on to serve as working material for the course Bauaufnahme I. A joint participation in both courses Bauaufnahme I and Laserscanning und Photogrammetrie is recommended. The data-processing is done in individually arranged meetings in the two weeks between 28th of October and 4th of November 2019.

The grading will be based upon the attendence to announced as well as individually arranged course events as well as the processing of the collected data in the idea of providing material for the course Bauaufnahme I.
