Aim of course

VU Laserscanning und Photogrammetrie

The course is open to students of architecture as well as to those of surveying and mapping (geodesy). It deals with the basics of photogrammetry and laserscanning and its application in the field of archaeology and historical building survey. Photogrammetry permits a fullscale representation of 2- or 3-dimensional objects (e.g. buildings, facades) by means of photography. Laserscanning is a relatively new technology, which uses a so called 3D-laserscanner for measuring 3-dimensional objects. By means of a laser beam, the instrument senses a building in high-end resolution and produces a 3D-modell, the so called point cloud.

Subject of course

The lecture part of the course in a first step deals with the basics of photogrammetry and 3d-laserscanning and gives hints to the approach of creating planning material like the digital equalisation, orthophoto, and 3D-photomodel. In a second step, different methods of stratigrafic analysis (stonework analysis, cartography of damages) will be introduced. These methods utilise the graphic material obtained.

The practice part of the course contains a laser-scanning based building survey at the Wiener Hofburg and the postprocessing back at the institute to finally translate the 3d-data into 2d-plans. Students that also attend 251.095 UE Bauaufnahme I will carry out a complete historical analysis of their part of the roof structure.
