From hand-measuring system to high tech Documentation and analysis of buildings This historical building survey course deals with different techniques of measuring, documenting and analysing historical buildings. It is based on the use of high-end technologies like totalstations and laserscanners and their combination with traditional measurement techniques. The structure will be documented with the highest possible geometrical precision and will be analysed in order to obtain reliable information about its building history and state of conservation. For more intense use of high-tech measuring instruments and a deeper study of building archaeology, the course 251.077, Building Survey II is recommended.

The course consists of some workshops divided into a theoretical part and a practical part, which will explore survey techniques ranging from the most basic measuring instruments, to the new digital 3D scanners. Students will be asked to apply the know-how presented during the theoretical sessions in several practical exercises.

In fall semester 2015, parts of the historic roof structure of the Hofbibliothek and Amalienburg in the Vienna Imperial Palace will be surveyed.
