Aim of course

Space and Technology, Privacy and Publicity

Students will write a bachelor thesis or a scientific paper. This semester’s topic is the analysis, via an argumentative essay, with spatial notions of privacy and publicity. Research questions will be detailed in collaboration with the advisors. Students will also be introduced to principles of argumentation and of scientific research and writing.

Subject of course

Part A – Students will first be introduced to (physical and perceived) concepts of privacy and publicity, but also to the associated recent discourses in architecture theory. Second, more or less new technologies will be discussed, which contest these concepts.

Part B – Students will write a scientific paper, which will consider the introduced discourses around privacy and publicity in architecture against the background of actual, technology assisted practices of everyday life. The essays will be completed in three steps: Assignment 1 will detail the research question. Assignment 2 will consider and revise the proposed argument/s. Assignments 1 + 2 will be presented and discussed in class during a presentation with a subsequent group discussion. Assignment 3 is the finished scientific paper.
