Introduction to Gender Studies in Architecture
Please note: this course is not offered anymore. In order to prepare for the exam it is sufficient to read the book Raum , Macht & Differenz. Gender Studies in der Architektur by Dörte Kuhlmann. Available at the institute baugeschichte:: bauforschung.
Today, every architect has to ensure gender mainstreaming and gender budgeting in public projects. Analyzing a range of ideas from biological, evolutionary and anthropological theories to a variety of feminist, psychoanalytic, poststructuralist and constructivist discourses, this course provides a comprehensive introduction to the problematics of gender and power in architectural and urban design. Besides a historical and theoretical discussion, the course will provide helpful practice-related tools for anyone becoming an architect.
Gender studies attempt to establish a theoretical category, in which women's and men's studies act at the same level with the aim to overcome discrimination due to gender. It is very interesting to look at the architectural discourse from this perspective and to challenge it by it's own means.
