After successful completion of the course, students are able to understand architecture, before the background of science and technology studies and cultural studies, as a place where a society's idea of itself and of the world expresses and manifests. Students have learnt to grasp the interdependency of theory, technics, knowledge, ability and power critically through the field of architecture theory and treatises, and to interrogate and reflect upon its various constellations. They have learnt to recognize analog issues across a variety of epochs throughout history as well as regions in contemporary discourse. They acquire a basic familiarity with how theoretical thought bears implications that impact architectural praxis, and they develop a consciousness for the broad social implications of architecture and discourse.

Written exams in two parts: Multiple Choice and Essay
Multiple Choice: this part concerns the basic text for this lecture course: Fritz Neumeyer, "Nachdenken über Architektur Eine kurze Geschichte ihrer Theorie" in ders., Quellentexte der Architekturtheorie (Prestel, 2002), S. 9-72.
Essay: this part concerns the weekly lectures. You will be presented at the beginning of the exam with four topics, each related to one of the lectures (including the respective additional literature). You will be expected to choose one of those four topics and write an essay in response to the question (summarizing and communicating the presented content).
Important: in order to pass the exam, you will have to pass each part of the exam separately.
It will be communicated in due time whether the exam can take place live or via TUWEL. The conditions will be the same either way.
